Think of Nicholas Medvescek and Marina Blue Jarrette as modern-day Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.
A couple of kids are gonna put on a show.
Only Judy and Mickey, a team famous for its "Hey, kids, let's put on a show!" spirit in movies, would be a bit shocked at "What Not to Do in Musical Theater," slated for a two performances this weekend.
"There's adult content and language," Jarrette said. "It's most appropriate for 16 and older."
The two Canyon del Oro graduates performed together at the school and longed to do it again.
"It came out of the two of us wanting to do a summer project together," said Medvescek, the son of Star photographer Ron Medvescek. Then he added with a shrug in his voice: "We just wanted to be in a show together."
So they've whipped together a satirical cabaret fat with songs from Broadway musicals such as "Rent," "A New Brain," "Wicked" and, of course, "There's No Business Like Show Business."
It's sassy, tongue-in-cheek, and pretty different from what the two intended to do when they began planning this in April.
"The idea has changed quite dramatically throughout the whole process," Jarrette said. "It's gone from a straight play to a musical."
"At some point, we thought it would be important to do the show without doing music," said Medvescek, whose strong vocal talent has landed him a scholarship at Emerson College in Boston.
That quickly changed, and they zeroed in on writing a cabaret that will connect the songs.
"We wanted to do all of our favorite songs, but it wouldn't make for a good show," Jarrette said. "We had to give up songs we wanted to do for songs that would work."
The performing aspect of "What Not to Do" was the easy part for the two. It was all the other stuff that was the challenge.
"Neither of us had been on the other side of the stage," Medvescek said. "Booking a space, advertising. . . ."
"But it's been the most rewarding," Jarrette quickly added.
"To get to do this completely original, intensive project, where we get to do all these aspects, has been a really, really wonderful experience."
