Interpreti Veneziani returns to Tucson on Sunday for an encore to its sold-out 2007 UApresents concert.
That was the year that the 22-year-old ensemble, which specializes in Baroque and Italian music, made its first U.S. tour. It was so well received that the group wasted no time putting together an encore tour.
The Italian ensemble will perform works by Vivaldi, De Falla, Mendelssohn and Corelli on period instruments, many of them as old as the compositions the group will perform.
Over its years of music-making, Interpreti Veneziani has gained a reputation for its ensemble artistry and virtuosic solo turns. Critics have marveled that the group invests new energy and personality into each piece it plays.
The 13-member orchestra's home base is the historic Church of San Vidal in Venice, where the memory and spirit of Antonio Vivaldi surely inspires the group. Vivaldi regularly performed in San Vidal, where Interpreti also performs more than 200 concerts a year.
Sunday's concert, which begins at 7 p.m., will include Vivaldi's Concerto for Violin, Strings and Harpsichord "La Tempesta di Mare" and his "Estro Armonico" Concerto for Two Violins, Strings and Harpsichord; De Falla's Dance from "La Vida Breve" for violin and strings; and Mendelssohn's Concerto in D minor for violin and strings. Corelli's Concerto Grosso for violins, cello, strings and harpsichord opens the performance at Crowder Hall, North Park Avenue at East Speedway. Tickets are $37 and $47 through the Centennial Hall box office, www.uapresents.org or 621-3341.
