"Going clubbing" could have a different meaning this year.
Joining a health club is a great step toward gaining health and fitness benefits.
Many clubs offer classes, personal training, top-of-the-line equipment and even sometimes massage and other services.
In honor of 2009, here are nine deals at local health clubs.
Curves: 15 locations in the Tucson area (www.curves.com).
This all-women club that offers a 30-minute circuit training program will give a free workout, and some newsletters and magazines offer a coupon for a free week.
Current specials include a $99 signup fee (normally $199) and free workouts until February. After that, it costs $39 a month with a 24-month contract.
Fit Center: 5555 E. Fifth St., 571-7000 (www.azfitcenter.com).
This facility targets members who are 50 and older.
People can get a free trial week. Other deals include a jump-start special that can be added on to a membership. It includes four hours of personal training with a pre- and post-fitness assessment for $325.
● Gold's Gym: 110 S. Church Ave., 623-6300; 5851 E. Speedway, 751-0303; 7315 N. Oracle Road, 297-8000 (www.goldsgym.com).
People can get a free week pass. There's currently no enrollment fee for a year membership (usually $99). Members pay $32 a month to use Gold's Gyms worldwide. Students and corporate accounts are $25 a month.
Ms. Fit Health Club: 7788 E. Speedway, 290-2900 (www.msfit.net).
This women-only, locally owned facility opened in 2001. It is offering half-off the $110 enrollment fee when two join at the same time. Dues also will cost $35 a month instead of $40 with a 12-month contract.
Pro Fitness and Health: 3346 S. Sixth Ave., 495-4987.
Owner Levi Olive said the club opened three months ago, and he has two doctors on staff. Besides fitness, services include manicures, pedicures and massage therapy.
If you bring in four canned food items, you don't pay the $100 enrollment fee. Costs per month are $30; $25 for seniors. All memberships are month to month.
Snap Fitness: 8816 E. Broadway, 546-1114; 1970 W. River Road, 293-1584 (www.snapfitness.com).
People can receive a free one-week pass. New members pay a $50 enrollment fee instead of $100. Snap's members sign no contracts and the facility is open 24 hours. Monthly fees range from $25 to $31.
● Sierra Fitness: 5455 N. Kolb Road, 577-9000 (www.sierrafitness.com).
People can receive a free day pass after taking a tour of the facility. Members can choose to go month to month or sign up for a 20-month contract. New members pay half-off the regular initiation fee of $200.
SWAT Fitness: 7000 E. Tanque Verde Road, 886-7928; 3820 S. Palo Verde Road, 886-7928; 6127 N. La Cholla Blvd., 579-6791 (www.swatfitness.com).
SWAT operates three studios and is now the personal training staff of the Northwest Gold's Gym.
To join SWAT's combat kettlebell classes, it costs $55 for the required three-hour introductory session (normally $85). If someone pays for a three-month, six-month or year membership ($648, $1,080, $1,600) in advance, the introductory session is free.
Boot camps cost $299 to get started and then are $150 per month (regularly $299 a month).
Tucson Racquet and Fitness Club: 4001 N. Country Club Road, 795-6960 (www.tucsonracquetclub.com).
The club is not charging an initiation fee, which usually costs $50-$175, and it will give members their third month free. Memberships are month to month, and monthly dues start at $50. The facility is open 24 hours. It includes a restaurant, bar and pro shop, which are open to the public.
Bally's Total Fitness and L.A. Fitness both declined to give specific membership prices, citing corporate rules. Calls to their respective corporate offices were not returned.
