What to do
1. Have an adult help you cut off the bottom of a small paper cup and place it upside down on the plate.
2. Knead the play dough until it's soft. Place the play dough around the cup to form the volcano, keeping the top open.
3. Place two or three tablespoons of baking soda in opening.
4. Slowly pour a small amount of vinegar into the volcano opening. What the eruption that happens when the baking soda and vinegar react together!
5. You can add some drops of red food coloring to the vinegar, before you pour it into the volcano, to help make the lava red.
One of the most popular activities at the Tucson Children's Museum is making erupting volcanoes.
You can make one at home. You'll need:
● Dixie or other small cups
● Scissors
● Playdough
● Baking soda (not baking powder)
● Vinegar
● Paper or foam plates
● Red food coloring (optional)
