Trevor Koessler watches as wildlife viewing specialist Jeff Babson thumbs through a reference book to find a particular specimen at the Nature Nights event.
Babson holds a scarab beetle, one of thousands of insects that showed up under black lights during the event at Cienega Creek Natural Preserve, 16000 E. Marsh Station Road.
Participants hiked about a mile from the Gabe Zimmerman Davidson Canyon Trailhead. They saw beetles, moths, millipedes and fireflies, and they heard a Western screech owl.
