Every day about 100 tons of comet dust and asteroid fragments collide with the Earth. Most burn up in the atmosphere. However, a kilometer-size or larger asteroid could someday hit our planet, causing a global disaster.
Bold plan goes for asteroid 'gold'
There may be space rocks loaded with platinum and gold, but mundane elements may be the real moneymakers in space, said Mark Sykes, CEO and director of the Tucson-based Planetary Science Institute.
