A Democrat-leaning poll indicates that Democrat Richard Carmona is inching closer to Republican Jeff Flake in the U.S. Senate race to replace Sen. Jon Kyl.
Flake held a 43-41 lead over Carmona in a survey of 791 likely Arizona voters conducted on June 3-4 by Public Policy Polling on behalf of the Project New America.
That’s a much closer margin than the previous poll done by Public Policing Polling in mid-May, in which Flake had a 48-25 lead on Carmona among 500 Arizona voters included in the survey.
“This is just one more sign that the Carmona campaign has momentum and is well-positioned to win come November,” said spokesman Andy Barr in an emailed statement.
Flake spokesman Andrew Wilder said in an emailed statement that "the only poll that matters will come on Election Day. And until then, liberal candidate Richard Carmona is going to have a difficult time running from the fact the he was personally recruited by President Obama and is the state’s leading advocate for 'ObamaCare.'"
Flake is facing a primary challenge from Republican Wil Cardon, but this poll did not ask the likely voters to choose between Cardon and Carmona. In the mid-May poll, Cardon had a 40-37 lead on Carmona.
The poll also shows President Barack Obama trailing Republican Mitt Romney by 3 points, 49-46.
The polls show that Democrats have a chance this November in Arizona the Project New America said in its news release. The organization is a progressive Denver-based research and strategy organization.
