PHOENIX (AP) — The self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America has suffered a broken left shoulder.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio reportedly tripped and fell on his way to lunch Thursday in downtown Phoenix.

The Arizona Republic says Arpaio's staff took him to the emergency room of a Phoenix hospital and X-rays showed the break.

Sheriff's officials say Arpaio doesn't need surgery and is expected back at work in a few days.

The Republic says Arpaio held a standard staff meeting Thursday morning, did an interview with a Phoenix television station and was walking to lunch when he fell around the One Renaissance Square plaza area.

The 80-year-old Arpaio was elected last November to his sixth consecutive term as sheriff in Arizona's most populous county.
