PHOENIX — Gov. Jan Brewer and Republican legislators ousted the head of the state's redistricting commission this evening, throwing the high-stakes political process of drawing new congressional and legislative districts into disarray.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett as acting governor while Brewer was out of state called the Legislature into special session on redistricting topics.

The key action was the 21-6 Senate vote to uphold Brewer's removal of Colleen Mathis as chair of the Independent Redistricting Commission.

A two-thirds vote of the Republican-controlled Senate was required to remove Mathis, the commission's only registered independent.
