ALBUQUERQUE — A shooting range and gun store is scheduled to hold a two-day contest to see who can kill the most coyotes in New Mexico.

KOB-TV reported that Calibers Shooting Sports Center in Albuquerque is set to hold the hunting challenge for two-member teams beginning Dec. 1. The grand prize is a pair of Bushmaster AR-15 rifles.

Caliber’s owner, Ryan Burt, said he came up with the idea after he was approached by several ranchers from around the state who have been dealing with coyotes harming livestock.

But Susan Weiss, an advocate for the “Coexist with Coyotes” group, blasted the contest.

“Hunting to eat is one matter,” she said. “But just hunting for a contest I think is really immoral and disgusting.”

Coyotes have no protection under New Mexico law.
