A group trying to oust Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is again relying on only volunteers to gather signatures in a bid to force a recall election against the sheriff.

Thursday's announcement by the recall group marks the second time since mid-March that fundraising difficulties have prompted it to stop using paid signature gatherers.

Recall organizer Lilia Alvarez says people who promised to contribute to the group changed their minds because a viable candidate hadn't been lined up to challenge Arpaio.

Alvarez says the group will continue gathering signatures with volunteers.

The group must turn in more than 335,000 valid signatures by May 30 to force an election.

Alvarez declined to say how many signatures have been gathered so far.

Three weeks ago, she said the group had 200,000 signatures.
