Contract is awarded to pave Skywalk road
KINGMAN - The Hualapai Tribe has awarded a $25 million contract to a Prescott company to straighten and finish paving the road that leads to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a popular tourist destination in Northwestern Arizona.
The tribe paved the first 4.5 miles of the road in 2009, and the contract awarded to Fann Contracting Inc. will finish the remaining nine miles. The rough road now twists, turns and dips into a wash.
The Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet from the Canyon's edge on the reservation.
Damaged highway is closed indefinitely
PAGE - State officials and the Navajo Nation are seeking an emergency declaration to get funds to quickly repair a stretch of U.S. 89 in Northern Arizona.
The Arizona Department of Transportation says damage to the roadway about 25 miles south of Page will keep that stretch closed indefinitely. A 150-foot section of pavement buckled Wednesday in what ADOT called a possible "geologic event," and major repairs are needed.
In the meantime, traffic is detouring around the closure by using U.S. 160 and Arizona 98. That adds 45 miles of driving.
