Free Medicaid forum set for Thursday

A conservative political advocacy group is inviting the public to a free forum about Medicaid.

The event, hosted by the Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity, is scheduled for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway.

Arizona state Sen. Steve Farley, D-Tucson and state Rep. Ethan Orr, R-Tucson, are among the scheduled speakers. Other include former state Sen. Frank Antenori, local physician Dr. Jane Orient and Arizona Board of Regents member Tyler Bowyer.

The state Legislature is scheduled to vote this session on whether to expand Medicaid.

In Arizona it would expand the qualifications from 100 percent up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level, covering an additional 57,000 Arizonans. The state would then qualify for federal matching funds to restore coverage to about 240,000 childless adults and continue coverage for 50,000 others.

Officials with the state Medicaid program, known as the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, are scheduled to hold their own information forums about Medicaid expansion in the upcoming weeks. One of those forums is expected to be held in Tucson.

Public is invited to downtown bike race

The public is invited to join professional cyclists for a criterium race in downtown Tucson Saturday.

The OPTUM/TMC Old Pueblo Grand Prix begins with a kids bike race and community bike parade at 5 p.m. in front of St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave.

Also included in the evening will be cruiser drag races and a halftime BMX stunt exhibition by two local BMX pros.

The final event of the night will be a Pro and Cat 1 men's race at 8 p.m.

Now in its third year, the event is expected to bring in both national and international athletes.

With a purse of $23,000, organizers say thousands of spectators, plus a large vendor expo, are expected to be part of the event.
