U.S. Rep. Ron Barber's office says the Tucson Democrat is doing well after undergoing "minor surgery" to remove a cancerous tumor from his tongue.

The office says Barber had the surgery Monday and was released from a hospital Tuesday.

A statement quotes Dr. Audrey Erman as saying the surgery was successful and that Barber is expected to make a full recovery.

The statement says Barber learned of the tumor on Nov. 13, a week after he won a full two-year term in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District.

Barber's office says he's feeling good and staying in Tucson this week but looking forward to returning to work in Washington next week.

Barber was an aide to Gabrielle Giffords when she was in Congress. Both were wounded in a January 2011 mass shooting in Tucson.
