Volunteers are being sought to pull buffelgrass from roadways, washes and parks across the Tucson area.

The sixth annual Beat Back Buffelgrass effort will be held Jan. 26 from 8 a.m. to noon.

It is sponsored by the Southern Arizona Buffelgrass Coordination Center.

Last year, more than 800 volunteers collected 1,597 bags of buffelgrass.

Buffelgrass is highly flammable and grows rapidly. It crowds out native plants, negatively affects native wildlife species and their habitat, and poses a fire threat to homes and other property.

Removal sites have been registered by various organizations to include the Boy Scouts, neighborhood groups and the University of Arizona softball team.

To sign up and view the sites, go to buffelgrass.org
