Incumbent Sharon Bronson, a Democrat, is our choice for re-election to the Pima County Board of Supervisors from District 3. The area includes much of western Pima County.
Bronson has acted to support the creation of private-sector jobs. She voted in 2010 for property-tax reductions to entice biomedical firm Roche to expand its Oro Valley campus to accommodate up to 500 more good-paying jobs. The immediate payback is that those workers pay income, sales and other taxes.
This summer, the county agreed to spend $1.4 million to build a wet lab for another biosciences company, Accelr8, which will move its headquarters here from Denver. The firm will pay below-market rent initially. Even if it eventually expands into larger quarters or leaves, the county will still be left with attractive lab space to rent to someone else.
Early this year, Bronson supported giving developers more time to get plans approved without paying additional fees. The extensions are warranted because it's still slow and difficult to obtain financing for projects on the drawing board.
These and other votes show that Bronson, who was first elected in 1996, understands how government can prudently encourage economic growth. The Star endorses Sharon Bronson.
