Be careful out there today. In many parts of Tucson, you'll be sharing the road with some 8,000 participants in the 28th annual El Tour de Tucson bicycle race.

Much of the course is around the perimeter of Tucson (see a map on Page B10 of today's Star), but in many parts of town that translates to scores of cyclists on your roads, including downtown.

The event is held every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and while it attracts big-name professional riders, it also hosts scores of novices, children and recreational cyclists. Cyclists may ride 109-, 79-, 66- and 40-mile routes. There are also 6-, 3- & 1/4-mile children's routes.

Look for cyclists on the roads beginning early this morning and all day, until around 6 p.m.

It's your job while behind the wheel today to keep a wary eye out for El Tour riders.
