An 18-year-old woman struck and killed by a car when she ran across Interstate 19 Sunday night.

The victim was struck while running across the southbound lanes of I-19 near milepost 28.5, south of Amado around 7:16 p.m., Officer Raul Molina, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said in a news release.

The woman was then run over by a second car, the release said.

The woman was part of a group of suspected illegal immigrants that Border Patrol agents were attempting to stop after receiving a report from a mobile surveillance system, Agent Jason Rheinfrank, a border patrol spokesman said in an email.

The woman was not being pursued by agents when the crash happened, Rheinfrank said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.
