A 58-year-old woman died Sunday evening after a car knocked a concrete trash can into a midtown 7-Eleven, injuring her.
Debra Newton was shopping inside the convenience store on East Speedway at North Columbus Boulevard shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday.
A Kia Sedona minivan drove off the road and hit the concrete can, knocking it into the store. It struck and injured Newton, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson police spokesman. The Kia then crashed into the store.
Newton died later of her injuries.
Investigators determined that before crashing into the building, the Kia was traveling east in the curb lane of Speedway, ran a red light and was hit by a Hyundai Accent, police said. The Kia lost control, drove off the road and into the 7-Eleven parking lot.
The Kia driver, 52-year-old Hassan Madex, was cited for one count of causing serious injury or death by a moving violation, a misdemeanor offense, police said.
