The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Friday for the Catalina and Rincon mountains until noon Saturday.

Hazardous driving conditions are expected, with snow and blowing snow at times.

Snow showers will increase in intensity tonight and into Saturday morning, the Weather Service said.

Snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are expected at elevations from 5,000 to 7,000 feet, with 8 to 12 inches above 7,000 feet. Locations above 9,000 feet may receive in excess of 12 inches of snow.

Winds of 25 mph to 30 mph, with gusts of 45 mph, are expected, diminishing tonight as the heaviest snow develops.

On Friday, a winter storm dropped heavy snow across Arizona’s high country and pummeled the desert areas with rain.

The storm is expected to continue through Saturday but with less precipitation.

Forest Lakes, northwest of Payson, reported 20 inches of snow as of Friday evening.

Flagstaff had more than a foot. The weather prompted City Hall and Northern Arizona University to shut down early.

Arizona Department of Transportation officials closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 about seven miles south of Flagstaff because of impassable conditions Friday evening.

The National Weather Service says rainfall measured at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport broke a record for the date with more than two-thirds of an inch.

However, the thunderstorms had largely moved out of the Phoenix metro area by Friday evening.
