Officers in Sierra Vista spent a few hours Thursday morning trying to drive out a bear that was jumping into residents' yards.
The bear was first spotted around 6:30 a.m. by officers on patrol in a residential area near Golf Links Road and Hummingbird Lane, said Cpl. Scott Borgstadt, a spokesman for the Sierra Vista Police Department.
The officers contacted the Arizona Game and Fish Department, which advised them to keep visual contact with the bear and try to get it out of the city, Borgstadt said.
Officers followed the bear and saw it jump into washes and jump block walls into residents' backyards. Other officers worked to warn residents who were walking or jogging in the area or at bus stops, Borgstadt said.
At about 9 a.m., officers were able to herd the bear into an open area off Avenida Cochise that leads into open desert and mountains on Fort Huachuca, Borgstadt said.
