March brings a bunch of free events for Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month. See azstateparks.com for a complete list; here's a sample:

AROUND TUCSON

• University Indian Ruin tours. See a Hohokam platform mound, an excavation in progress and a site normally closed to the public.

When: 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Saturday and March 16.

Where: University Indian Ruin, 2754 N. Indian Ruins Road, follow signs.

• Pots and Zuni culture: Dinner talk by archaeologist Matt Peeples on what cooking pots tell us about 13th-century society.

When: Tuesday, arrive at 5 p.m., talk is at 6 p.m.

Where: Casa Vicente restaurant, 375 S. Stone Ave.

• Vista del Rio Archaeology Celebration: See part of a Hohokam village and enjoy demonstrations and kids' activities, including making pottery, grinding corn and playing Native American games.

When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 16.

Where: Vista del Rio Cultural Resource Park, 7575 E. Desert Arbors St.

DAY TRIPS

• Fairbank Day: See the ghost town come to life with historic re-enactments.

When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Where: From I-10, take Arizona 90 south toward Sierra Vista. At Whetstone, turn left (east) on Arizona 82. After about 10 miles, cross the San Pedro River and the old railroad grade. Parking is about a quarter mile east of the river on the left.

• Empire Ranch: Tour the 1870s ranch house and enjoy activities and music.

When: 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. March 9.

Where: From I-10, take Arizona 83 south toward Sonoita. At around 18 miles, find the Empire Ranch Historic Site sign, turn left on the dirt road and follow signs to the ranch, about three miles.
