Heavy rainfall has caused several city streets in Nogales to flood and city officials are asking Nogales residents to stay indoors and off the road to prevent back ups and problems.

As the storms head toward Tucson, widespread showers are expected throughout the Tucson area until the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy rain was reported east of Tucson around noon. The Department of Public Safety said there was deep standing water on Interstate 10 near Marsh Station Road.

The DPS said there were also four separate accidents near Marsh Station Road. The crashes were in the westbound lanes at milepost 289 and 290.

About 8 a.m. flash flooding in Nogales caused portions of several roads to be closed, but most have reopened, said Aaron White a spokesman for the City of Nogales.

“If people don’t have to go out that’ll help us avoid any potential negative situations,” White said.

Sandbags can be picked up at the Safeway parking lot, 465 W. Mariposa Road, in Nogales.

The City of Nogales Housing Authority, 350 W. Western Ave., will set up an emergency shelter for residents.

Storm activity in the Nogales area picked up again within the last half hour, according to the National Weather Service.

“Flooding will continue to be a concern through the rest of the day,” said Glenn Lader, an NWS meteorologist.

Heavy rain in Sonora will cause the Nogales Wash to overlow and flood streets, home and washes in Nogales, the NWS predicts.

Thunderstorms have started to develop south of Tucson and there will be widespread showers throughout the city until the afternoon, Lader said.

A flash flood watch was issued this morning for western Pima County, the upper Santa Cruz River Valley and the Tohono O’odham Nation.
