Staff at a southside school had to be evacuated after a fierce storm blew through this afternoon, knocking down power poles and damaging the building's roof.

And in the Foothills, a house fire may have been caused by a lightening strike.

Van Buskirk Elementary School, 725 E. Fair Street off South Park Avenue, sustained some damage, but no one inside was injured, said Capt. Chris Jurvig, spokesman for the Tucson Fire Department.

Late this afternoon, crews from the Rural/Metro Fire District responded to a house fire in the 4700 block of north Via Molino near East Snyder Road and East Catalina Highway, that may have been sparked by lightening.

A line of thunderstorms has dropped heavy rain — up to an inch and more — through much of Tucson.

A flash flood warning is in effect for the area until 4:15 p.m.

Radar showed the storms were causing low-level flash flooding in the Tanque Verde, Sabino Canyon and Catalina Foothills area.

Power poles have been reported knocked down, and fire crews were being called to conduct water rescues, particularly on Tucson’s south and west sides.

Tucson Electric Power says 9,000 customers are currently without power because of poles down at South Park Avenue and East Fair and Irvington Road and Campbell Avenue.

The National Weather Service said up to an inch of rain has fallen in areas of Tucson.

Also, the intersection of South Euclid Avenue and East Silverlake Road is closed for an undetermined length of time because of the storm, Tucson police said. Please use alternative routes.
