New Loughner evaluation due Jan. 25

The psychologist assessing Jared Lee Loughner's competency must turn in a new evaluation by Jan. 25, a judge ordered Monday.

U.S. District Judge Larry A. Burns ordered psychologist Christina Pietz to send the evaluation to him, and said he'll send it on to the parties in the case.

If necessary, Burns said in his order, he'll schedule a hearing on or around Feb. 9. That's when Loughner's current four-month stay in a federal prison hospital expires.

Loughner is charged with 49 crimes in the Jan. 8, 2011, mass shooting that left six people dead and 13 with gunshot wounds, including intended target U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Pietz and a psychiatrist previously diagnosed Loughner with schizophrenia. Loughner has been undergoing forced medication for that mental illness since July.
