In a unanimous vote Tuesday the Marana Town Council approved a ban on farming medical-grade marijuana.

The exception is pot grown and sold at the two dispensaries already approved by the town.

The ban was proposed by Marana Police Chief Terry Rozema after Arizona Natural Remedies proposed an 8,000-square-foot indoor marijuana farm at a nursery near North Wentz and West Sagebrush roads.

The company planned to sell products made from the plants at its dispensary in Ajo.

Rozema said transporting marijuana from the farm to the store would attract crime and stretch police resources thin.

Town leaders feared farmers would grow marijuana in Marana to supply many dispensaries in the state’s budding medical-marijuana industry.

Marana resident Stephanie Ashcraft, a former member of the police advisory commission, told the Town Council she favors a ban to help maintain Marana’s reputation as a family-friendly community.
