1884: The Arizona Pioneers' Historical Society, now known as the Arizona Historical Society, holds its organizational meeting in Tucson.
1890: The Empire Ranch starts a drive of 1,000 head of cattle to California to escape the high freight rates of $7 per head.
1914: President Woodrow Wilson declares Phoenix's Papago Saguaro National Monument, now Papago Park, a national park for its "Splendid examples of the giant and many other species of cacti and the yucca palm, with many additional forms characteristic of desert flora (that) grow to great size and perfection and are of great scientific interest, and numerous prehistoric photographs of archaeologial and ethnological value.:
