1861: Sonoita Valley rancher John Ward's stepson is kidnapped. The incident leads to the "Bascom Affair" in Apache Pass when Lt. Bascom and a detail of 54 men attempte to arrest Cochise, Chiricahua Apache chief, for the kidnapping.

1879: The railroad car known as Terminus, which houses a post office and Wells Fargo Station, rolls into Arizona for the first time and follows the construction of tracks — from Yuma to New Mexico — for two years.

1927: 300 Navajo Indian scouts set out on the trail of two men who shot Sheriff A.A. Maxwell of Apache County.

1947: Crown Prince Amir Saud of Saudi Arabia tours the Salt River Valley to obtain ideas for the agricultural development of his own country.

2008: A day-long rainstorm soaks Maricopa County and drops up to three inches of rain in the northeastern mountains. A dozen roads in Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale are temporarily impassable due to flooded wash crossings. The Salt River Project (SRP) releases more than 15,000 cubic feet per second of floodwater over Granite Reef Dam into the Salt River through the Phoenix metropolitan area.
