1787: Mountaineer Bill Williams is born. The city of Williams and the Bill Williams River are named after him.

1924: 117 automobiles become stalled in the mud near Casa Grande. The vehicles had to be towed to the Southern Pacific tracks, where they bumped over the ties 1 1/2 miles before reaching a stretch of road they could negotiate.

2009: The Arizona Cardinals host their first home playoff game since the 1940s — when they were then known as the Chicago Cardinals — at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. The Cardinals beat the Atlanta Falcons, 30-24, during the NFC wild card game. The team eventually advanced to taken on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII.
