A Princeton study published in the journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior found that rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same.
Critics say the U.S. government's subsidies of corn crops are fueling the production of high-fructose corn syrup as an ingredient in certain brands of cheap food like mayonnaise, fruit juice, soda, ketchup, frozen foods and cereal.
