A section of University Boulevard will close next week for streetcar construction, adding to closures in place on Fourth Avenue and Congress Street.
The shutdown is planned for next Monday and is expected to last for four months.
It will affect four residential blocks of University, west of Euclid Avenue to Bean Avenue, and force the intersections of University and Bean, Second, Jacobus and First avenues to be closed to through traffic. Euclid will remain open.
Nearby, Fourth Avenue is closed for three blocks between University and Sixth Street. Congress Street is closed for five blocks, from Toole Avenue to Stone Avenue. And a section of Second Street is closed on the University of Arizona campus.
Construction of the SunLink modern streetcar system is planned for two eight-month phases. The first phase began April 2.
Other stretches of roadwork coming in the first phase include Helen Street and Warren Avenue near University Medical Center, more of Congress Street, and then Broadway.
Commuters who use Broadway through downtown can expect it to be partially closed starting in early May, all the way from Granada Avenue to Fifth Avenue. Two lanes of Broadway will be open during the morning and afternoon rush hours. But the rest of the time, traffic will be limited to a single lane.
When it begins operating late next year, SunLink will include four miles of track linking the university, Fourth Avenue and downtown Tucson. The project is expected to cost $196 million.
