SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California’s political watchdog agency says an $11 million campaign donation from an Arizona nonprofit represents the largest case of campaign money laundering in state history.
The California Fair Political Practices Commission on Monday disclosed the donors to the nonprofit, Americans for Responsible Leadership, after the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously Sunday that the group must turn over its records.
The Arizona group received money from two other groups without disclosing that, an apparent violation of California law.
Its $11 million donation went to the Small Business Action Committee PAC, which opposes Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax initiative and a separate initiative that would limit unions’ ability to collect money for political causes.
The donation came from Americans for Job Security through a second intermediary, the Center to Protect Patient Rights.
