Cochise County, where Republican Congressional District 2 candidate Martha McSally made her strongest showing, finished counting its last votes Wednesday.

But when the totals were posted, McSally still trailed incumbent Democrat Ron Barber by 654 votes. With more than 25,000 provisional ballots remaining in Pima County, however, the race is still too close to call.

McSally easily carried Cochise County, claiming 59 percent of the vote to Barber's 41 percent.

But a large majority of the district's voters are from Pima County, where Barber is holding about a four-point edge, giving him a narrow lead. All of the remaining votes are from Pima County.

Election workers in Pima County tallied nearly 1,500 early ballots and the first 927 provisional ballots on Wednesday, leaving more than 25,000 provisional ballots countywide to be tabulated.

Statewide, Secretary of State Ken Bennett reported that as of midafternoon Wednesday, 192,337 early and provisional ballots remain to be counted.

His online posting said all but Maricopa and Pima counties have finished counting their early ballots, but most counties have provisional ballots remaining.

In another close race awaiting the slow-coming results, yes votes for Proposition 409, Tucson's $100 million street bond proposal, outnumbered no votes by 242 - the widest margin either way for the bond package since the counting began more than a week ago.

The count will continue today.
