DuVal makes it clear: no bid for US Senate

Board of Regents Chairman Fred DuVal won't be running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.

Asked why he made that decision, DuVal responded, "In the end, pretty simple. It is a critical time in the plight of the universities, and I have just been elected board chair."

Time constraints prevent his ability to do both, he added.

So far, no Democrats officially have announced they're in the running to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl.

On the Republican side, only U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake has announced, after U.S. Rep. Trent Franks opted to stay put in the House instead of mounting a challenge from the right.

Flake reported having about $1.5 million on hand for his bid.

Campaign funds keep rolling in for Giffords

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is still recuperating in a Houston hospital, but she has a healthy start on fundraising for the next election cycle.

She raised more than $350,000 in the first quarter of the year - more than the $280,000 she raised at the start of last year - leaving her with more than half a million in cash on hand for a future bid.

Her colleague, U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, reported having $54,700 cash on hand.

His Republican challenger, Gabriela Saucedo Mercer, raised $13,000 the first quarter.

2 seeking executive post with redistricting panel

The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission has scheduled interviews for two candidates for executive director: Raymond Bladine and Geoffrey Gonsher.

Bladine, a consultant, applied for a seat on the commission itself. An independent, Bladine was a former deputy city manager in Phoenix who said he observed two City Council redistricting rounds during his tenure.

Gonsher formerly served as the director of the state's Department of Racing and also as executive director for the state lottery.

The interviews will take place Wednesday in Phoenix.
