A longtime Tucson-based state prosecutor is making the move to the federal courthouse.
John Evans, who for the past 15 years has served as head of Tucson's criminal trials unit for the Arizona attorney general, was appointed Tuesday to a position in the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Evans will serve as a senior adviser to U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke, focusing on border issues, according to a news release.
"John Evans has had a distinguished career as a prosecutor and as a key member of the law enforcement community," Burke said in the release. "He brings a wealth of legal and trial experience to the office and will play a critical role in Southwest border issues and strategies."
Evans, who chairs the Arizona Bar Association's Criminal Rules Committee, will advise Burke on crimes occurring along Arizona's border with Mexico, such as alien smuggling, drug-related offenses and financial and fraud crimes, the release said.
