The Salt Lake City man who wants to recall Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik can legally head a political committee to do so, said Pima County Elections Director Brad Nelson.
Last week, when the recall effort was announced, Nelson said state law was unclear on whether someone who lives outside the county could start up a recall for a county official.
The Pima County Attorney's Office has since told Nelson that Salt Lake resident Dan Baltes, head of Americans Against Immigration Amnesty, LLC, is able to lead the recall effort.
Baltes has filed the appropriate paperwork, and he can now gather signatures on recall petitions, Nelson said.
Though the campaign started out of state, only signatures from registered Pima County voters count toward the petition requirement of 90,809 to get the issue on the ballot. The county deadline for those signatures is 120 days, or May 24, Nelson said.
Baltes said he started the recall after hearing frustration and anger from many people about Dupnik's statements after the shooting rampage Jan. 8.
Dupnik linked the shootings with political vitriol.
After filing paperwork Monday, Baltes is now chairman of the political committee Recall Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik.
