Tucsonans have their first opportunity to weigh in on the draft congressional and legislative maps drawn up by the Independent Redistricting Commission.
The commission will hear from the public at 6 p.m. today at the University of Arizona's Student Union Memorial Center, in the north Ballroom, 1303 E. University Blvd.
Meanwhile, a special legislative committee appointed by majority Republicans to make recommendations to the state redistricting commission holds its second meeting.
Lawmakers are invoking a constitutional provision allowing the Legislature to make recommendations to the commission.
The special committee plans Monday afternoon to hear testimony regarding Pima and Yuma counties and regarding counties in eastern Arizona.
Republicans have criticized the commission's draft maps of new congressional and legislative districts as favoring Democrats and maybe violating the Arizona Constitution's redistricting criteria.
Democratic legislators say the Republicans are undermining the public vote that took redistricting out of the hands of the Legislature and are just trying to protect incumbents.
The redistricting commission is in the midst of a monthlong public comment period on its proposed maps.
