Do neighborhood vandals constantly blight your fence or garage with graffiti?

Then you may want to join Councilwoman Regina Romero Saturday to acquire a few tips and techniques to fight back.

Romero and Graffiti Protective Coatings Inc. are partnering to host the Ward 1 graffiti-abatement event from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at BK's Hot Dogs, 5118 S. 12th Ave.

"This event will give residents the tools to do small-scale graffiti abatement in their communities," Romero said. "By teaching one another how to tackle this problem early on, we hope to be able to rid our neighborhoods of blight even faster and continue fostering pride in our community."

Representatives from Graffiti Protective Coatings will demonstrate abatement techniques, instruct residents on how to report graffiti crimes to the city's Department of Transportation, and hand out cleaning materials so folks can rid their neighborhoods of graffiti.

"This will be a great opportunity to involve residents in the cleanup process and educate them as to what can be done at a grass-roots level," said Lupe Mercado, general manager of Graffiti Protective Coatings. "Graffiti attracts graffiti, and we hope to see residents continue doing local cleanups in their neighborhoods to stop the problem before it gets out of control."

Breakfast and lunch will be provided for cleanup volunteers.

Romero hopes Saturday's event will be the catalyst for a larger effort.

"We hope this can kick off a lasting partnership between local businesses, schools and residents," Romero said. "We'd like to see this neighborhood collaboration move beyond this event and continue exploring efforts to beautify the 12th Avenue corridor."
