A Tucson woman who has dedicated her life to helping animals now needs some help in return.
Judy Glore, the founder of HEART, or Happy Equine Acres Rescue & Therapy, has adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer in which the tumor entwines around the heart.
"A couple months ago, Judy was experiencing some pain and went to have it checked out and the doctors discovered a large tumor, the size of her hand, in her left lung, which is wrapped around her aorta," said her friend and HEART volunteer, Erica Reid.
Reid said Glore's insurance is very limited and does not cover her chemo or radiation.
Glore, 52, started HEART in 2009 to help rehabilitate rescued horses and then adopt them out. She underwent surgery Friday at University Medical Center, where she is also being treated for pneumonia and a septic infection.
Loretta Schwenn is a friend who has helped others with fundraisers in the past. Their goal is to raise $25,000.
"This woman has a following," she said. "I can't believe the outcry. So many people are doing so much."
At the Nov. 25 fundraiser, everything has been donated.
"The $10 cover and the proceeds from the raffle and auction items will go directly to Judy so she can use it for her medical expenses," Reid said.
"We are hoping that we can get 500 to 600 people to show up through the day at the fundraiser."
People can also buy pieces of a healing quilt for $5 or $6.
