St. Philip's Friends of Music is gearing up for its annual series of Lenten noontime recitals.
Starting Feb. 14, an array of local instrumentalists and vocalists will present a half-hour of music starting at 12:15 p.m. on Thursdays.
"A Schubert Interlude" begins the series. Schubert's piano trio in b-flat major, op. 99, will be performed by the Trent Piano Trio - Alan Brundage, violin; Nancy Monsman, cello; and Benjamin Ward, piano.
On Feb. 21, Venti e Arpe, a trio of Diana Schiable, flute; Martin J. Van Klompenberg, bassoon; and Lauren Hayes, harp; performs a selection of modern works.
On Feb. 28, "The Versatile Clarinetist," Richard Evert, will play clarinet music of various styles, including French classical, cabaret and jazz.
Skyline Flutes, a quartet consisting of Jerry Ervin, Christine Harper, Deena Reedy and Sandy Schwoe-bel, will present eclectic and eloquent music on March 7. Their concert will feature the Arizona premiere of "Harmony in Blue and Gold" by Eric Ewazen, as well as the world premiere of "In the Shadow of Thy Wings," a musical reflection on Psalm 17 by prominent Tucson composer Jay Vosc.
On March 14, cellist Harvey Wolfe joins flutist Paula Redinger and violinist Alicia Hagerman to play 18 variations and fantasy on a theme from Mozart's "Don Giovanni" by Anton Reicha. Wolfe will also play a suite for solo cello by Ernst Krenek.
The series concludes on March 21 with tenor Doug Spurlin and pianist Mary Lonsdale Baker presenting "Songs of Travel" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. This cycle of nine songs set to poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson offers a look into the journey of a young man as he experiences the joys, sorrows, and trials and tribulations of life and comes to terms with the choices that he has made along the way.
The public is invited. Donations are accepted to St. Philip's Friends of Music.
The concerts will be held in the Bloom Music Center at St. Philip's, at 4440 N. Campbell Ave. at East River Road. Parking is available in the north parking lot or under the solar-covered parking structure on the east side. The office phone is 299-6421.
