St. Philip's Friends of Music presents classical guitarist Philip Hemmo at 7 p.m. Friday in the music center at the church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.

A former Tucson resident, Hemmo is making a stop here for his third annual concert in support of the St. Philip's After School Music Program.

This year he has invited Tucson flutist Sandy Schwoebel and soprano Amy Street Williams to join him for an evening of chamber music and solo guitar works. As in the past, all proceeds go to the After-School Music Program. Works to be performed include compositions by Villa-Lobos, de Falla, Weiss, Brouwer and Tarrega.

Hemmo has served as guitar faculty at both the University of Arizona and Pima College. He is a prolific performer and has been featured as a soloist across the country. His textbook "Beginning Classroom Guitar" is in use across the United States at colleges and universities. Hemmo now lives in Springfield, Ill.

Admission is a $15 suggested donation to St. Philip's Friends of Music, though no one is turned away for not paying.

For more information call the church at 299-6421.

About the after-school program

All proceeds from Friday's concert will go to St. Philip's After-School Music and Homework Program.

The program, in its fourth year, offers vocal and instrumental training, supervised homework sessions and a daily snack to students in grades 3-5 from neighboring schools.

Students from Rio Vista and Holaway elementary schools attend for free, and scholarships for other students are offered based on need.

For more information call Bruce Phillips at 299-6421.
