Christian theology origins topic of talk
"The Invention of Christian Theology?" will be the focus Sunday of the Adult Education program at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church.
The discussion will take place at 11 a.m. at the center at the church, 4625 E. River Road.
The seed plot for the entire history of Christian theology is found in the Apostle Paul's letter to the Christian community in Rome around the year 60 A.D., according to professor Jerry Gill, a church member who will lead the discussion.
"In this letter, unlike those he had written to the other churches that he had initiated throughout the Mediterranean world, Paul spent little time dealing with practical local problems. Instead, he laid out a broad-stroked outline of the major themes and implications of the Gospel message," Gill said.
"In the Book of Romans, Paul begins by explaining the need for the good news concerning Jesus, then moves on to a discussion of its basis in God's grace, how it should be appropriated through faith, and the ethical responsibilities that go with it. Thus Romans is a mini-systematic theology and served as the basis for thought of the theologians of the Christian Church from Augustine and Aquinas on through Martin Luther, John Calvin, Karl Barth and Paul Tillich."

Wine tasting, silent auction set for April 7
The 10th annual "Taste of Spring" wine tasting and silent auction fundraiser will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. April 7 at the Five Palms Steak and Seafood Restaurant, 3500 E. Sunrise Drive.
All proceeds go to the Arizona chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association.
The event will feature food from seven local restaurants, wine tastings, and live music.
Door prizes and a raffle for a four-day, three-night stay at the Hotel del Coronado for two in Coronado, Calif., are included in the ticket price of $50 in advance or $60 at the door. Tickets can be bought online at apdaarizona.org or by calling 326-5400.
Raffle tickets are $25 each or five for $100.
