The Dreadnutts, winners of the Telluride Bluegrass Band contest in 1991, will perform Saturday at Abounding Grace Sanctuary.
The concert is part of the Live Acoustic Venue Association's all-star series. The show will start at 7 p.m. at the sanctuary, 2450 S. Kolb Road.
The five-member band features four of Tucson's finest rapid-fire instrumentalists and is fronted by the legendary Bob Meighan, who has lived in Phoenix for many years.
Meighan's vocal abilities and musicianship made the Bob Meighan Band popular in the 1970s and landed it a Capitol Records contract. The Bob Meighan Band got its start in the early '70s in Phoenix covering country classics such as "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" and songs by Poco, the Band and Jackson Browne, along with an increasing number of Meighan's original songs.
As its popularity grew the Bob Meighan Band began playing larger venues, festivals and colleges. In the mid-'70s the band moved to Tucson. After playing at some of the bars on North Fourth Avenue, it settled into its new home at The Pawnbroker on the east side of Tucson. The band played there several nights a week, always to a crowded room.
The band also features Peter McLaughlin, Earl Edmonson, Kirby Mittelmeier and Brian Davies. All have performed with various rock, bluegrass and country bands over the years.
McLaughlin has won numerous flatpicking contests and he has toured with Laurie Lewis and Grant Street.
Edmonson, the nephew of the late, great Travis Edmonson, was gifted with a golden voice. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he has performed for many years with the Titan Valley Warheads and is a Telluride fingerpicking champion.
Davies worked as a Hollywood side musician, playing guitar and electric bass during the punk/new wave/metal era before moving to Tucson and playing with a variety of zydeco, rock, folk and bluegrass musicians, including with Mittelmeier in the Crystal Ridge Bluegrass Band.
Mittelmeier, on mandolin, is known for the fun and inspiration he brings to any band.
