"Desert Dwellers: The Art of Pam Cheeseman" will be on display in the gallery at Kirk-Bear Canyon Library, 8959 E. Tanque Verde Road, Saturday through June 30.

Cheeseman's subjects are usually wildlife such as animals and flowers, but she has also done portraits and landscapes. Since moving to Arizona more than a decade ago, she has developed a fascination with the beauty of the desert, the multitude of wildlife and cacti, and the vibrant colors and light of the Southwestern vistas.

Cheeseman began painting with watercolor about 10 years ago. Watercolor is generally described as painting with water-soluble pigments on paper. It is an unpredictable medium that can be both challenging and inspiring.

Recently Cheeseman became interested in exploring other surfaces for her paintings. She began using a product called aquabord, a clay-coated hardboard panel that simulates the absorbency and texture of cold-pressed watercolor paper but with a reworkable surface. When the work is complete, the surface is sealed with varnish so the painting does not need to be put under glass.

The other art technique featured in this show is scratchboard. This is a process using a clay-coated hardboard panel that is coated with India ink. A drawing is transferred to the board and then the ink is scratched off to create a black-and-white drawing. For added dimension, colored inks can be added to the white areas, then scratched again for more highlights and volume. As with the aquabord, the artwork is then sprayed with varnish and framed without glass.

Cheeseman is a signature member of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild and a juried member of the Southern Arizona Arts Guild. She has juried into and exhibited in shows for several years and has won numerous awards.

View the show during library hours - 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
