1837: Army Chaplin and Maj. Winfield Scott, for whom Scottsdale is named, is born. Scott homesteaded in the Scottsdale area while still serving at Fort Huachuca.

1908: Two hundred prominent citizens of Douglas gather in the new Gadsden Hotel for a "dollar dinner" to discuss and plan for the future of the young city of Douglas, then less than seven years old.

1919: Although first afforded Federal protection in 1893 as a Forest Reserve and later as a National Monument, the Grand Canyon achieves National Park status on this day — three years after the creation of the National Park Service. According to the NPS, Grand Canyon National Park receives close to 5 million visitors each year — a far cry from the annual visitation of 44,173 which the park received in 1919.

2000: The floor in McKale Center is named "Lute Olson Court" in honor of the University of Arizona men's basketball coach. On Jan. 7, 2001, the court would be renamed "Lute & Bobbi Olson Court" at a memorial for Lute's late wife, Bobbi. Olson is one of three coaches in NCAA history to post 29 or more 20-win seasons — 20 of those consecutively.
