1540: Francisco Vasquez de Coronado sets out from Mexico in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola. His expedition is the first to explore what is now Arizona, and his men were the first Europeans to visit the Hopi Villages and see the Grand Canyon.

1931: Fifteen convicts escape form the State Prison at Florence.

1945: Marines raise the American flag during the World War II battle of Iwo Jima. Among those in raising the flag in the iconic photo was Marine Corporal Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Sacaton.
