1863: President Abraham Lincoln signs an act by Congress that carves the Arizona Territory out of the larger New Mexico Territory.

1897: Reports are received from Tucson, Benson, Tombstone and Pantano, describing a brilliant meteor that passes overhead at a low altitude.

1901: The first Arizona state song, "Hail to Arizona, The Sun Kissed Land," is sung in public for the first time at the new Territorial Capitol dedication.

1929: the Pima County Fair is leveled by high winds and closed. Winds of up to 80 miles per hour are recorded.

1994: Jim Griffith, the founder and virtual heart and soul of Tucson Meet Yourself, announces he will resign as coordinator of the 21-year-old multicultural festival and retire its name after the 1994 event. The event still occurs each October in Tucson.

2008: Tiger Woods beats fellow American Stewart Cink, 8 and 7, in the 36-hole World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship at The Gallery Golf Club in Marana. The victory is Woods' fourth straight on the PGA Tour and the 63rd of his career, putting him ahead of Arnold Palmer in third place for all-time wins.
