Skin-cancer study

focuses on sun safety

St. Gregory College Preparatory Middle School students are participating in a study that aims to increase sun-safety awareness.

The Texting 4 Teens campaign was developed by the Skin Cancer Institute at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

It looks to see if sending text messages can activate awareness of the importance of sun-safe behaviors, promote increased knowledge of skin-cancer facts and risks, and produce an increase in sun-safe practices among middle-schoolers.

Late last month St. Gregory students took part in an informational session on sun safety and had the opportunity to sign up as test subjects to receive the text messages for 12 weeks.

The study will examine the students’ behavior before, during and after.

In addition to receiving the safety message, participating students will be compensated.
