Sabino High School has been named a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School.
The TUSD school is one of only four campuses to receive the honor in Arizona from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, according to a U.S. Department of Education news release.
The award recognizes exemplary high performing schools that are among their state's highest performing, and exemplary improving schools, which have shown progress in improving student academic achievement. Sabino is considered to be an exemplary high performing school.
The U.S. Department of Education will honor 236 public and 50 private schools at a recognition ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.
"Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers," Duncan said in the news release.
The Department of Education requested nominations from the top education official in every state. Duncan then invited every nominated school to submit an application for possible recognition.
Other Arizona schools receiving the honor include: Chandler Traditional Academy - Liberty Campus, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado Elementary School in Nogales, and Xavier College Preparatory Roman Catholic High School in Phoenix.
"This is a proud day for these four schools," said Arizona Schools Chief John Huppenthal. "This award recognizes a commitment to excellence in education — and more importantly, a commitment to our students."
