The Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board will postpone its decision to make further budget cuts until next month.

The Governing Board was scheduled to decide whether to close the Ocotillo Early Learning Center and cut 13 physical education teachers, along with middle school truancy officers, library clerks and other positions at tonight's meeting.

The board is expected to make those decisions at its March 12 meeting, according to Mary Veres, a district spokeswoman.

The district wanted to present more information about the potential cuts and closures to the Governing Board before the decision, she said.

The board voted on Feb. 12 to cut 18 teachers and shut its Family Resource and Wellness Center in an effort to close a budget deficit that ranges from $3.2 million to $4.6 million.

Board members also voted to eliminate dropout recovery teachers and coordinators, and reduce overtime pay for off-duty police officers by 25 percent.

The budget-deficit number depends on whether the district receives $1.4 million in inflationary funding from the state, which would make up for money the district hadn't received since 2010.

Sunnyside is aiming to cut $4 million.

The first round of cuts will save the district almost $3 million. The district likely will cut another $1 million.

Sunnyside might discuss the proposed cuts at tonight's meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Sunnyside High School auditorium, 1725 E. Bilby Road, but no decisions are expected. The Governing Board also will hold a study session at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
